Cyber-physical risk in smart water systems
Risk models reveal how deceptive sensor data and natural hazards can compound, offering a basis for more resilient real-time water infrastructure.

Smart water technologies enable more efficient and adaptive operations, but they also introduce new cybersecurity vulnerabilities. We develop methods to quantify impacts under compounding natural and cyber-physical threats.
By examining how deceptive sensor data alters real-time control decisions in a smart stormwater system, our work shows that false-data injection can significantly amplify flood risk—especially during less severe but more frequent storms.
This framework provides evidence for cyber-defense planning and resilient design in smart stormwater, irrigation, reservoir, and other networked water systems.
